As noted in the "Waypoints" section of the website, BBSA originated as a small boat racing club. Today, BBSA still sponsors two major One Design regattas every summer: the Broad Bay Regatta and the Richard B. Johnston Memorial Regatta. All types of small boat sailors are encouraged to attend and those not having enough for a one-design start will be scored together using the Portsmouth handicap system. There are other local small boat racing opportunites: Sail Virginia Beach offers a variety of dinghy racing activities including a Frostbite Series and the Norfolk Naval Station offers dinghy racing clinics for military personnel on Willoughby Bay.
