Russ and Melody Fink have planned a terrific Memorial Day Cruise to Mobjack Bay. This is the same destination as last year, if any of you joined that cruise. This is an anchoring cruise with a potluck ashore at Roy and Irene Weisert's on Saturday night. Bring your own chairs, something to throw on the grill, and a dish to share. They have some space at their dock, first reservations, first serve. Don’t forget to RSVP or register here if you plan on attending. See details below.

Date(s) of Cruise:

May 25-27, 2019

Short Description:

This is BBSA/HYC’s annual Memorial Day weekend cruise to the Mobjack Bay area.  Come join the partying and fellowship.

RSVP:

Please contact us by May 18th, if possible, if you plan to join this exciting cruise, so we can plan for the approximate number of people attending our Saturday docktail/potluck get together.

Destination(s):

We plan to anchor in the East River farther in than Williams Wharf. Generally, there is good anchoring on both sides of the channel between day marks green 13 and 15 (Williams Wharf to Long Point). If the wind in that area is adverse for comfort, we will retreat up beyond Long Point. Roy and Irene Weisert have generously offered the use of their dock for boats which do not want to anchor – first to reserve with us will get priority. The group may or may not decide (at the docktail/dinner get together on Saturday at Weisert’s) to relocate over to the Severn River for Sunday night. If the group decides to relocate to the Severn, we can anchor beyond School Neck Point on the Northwest branch or on the Southwest branch past red 2.

Navigation /Local Knowledge:

Contact us if you have any concerns.

Anchoring:

The East River is generally protected from any long fetch (waves), but not wakes. There are a lot of nice areas for kayaking and dinghying. This area is where high schools run crew races in the spring. If we are lucky, we might see some crew practice in the channel.

Social Activities:

  • We will have Happy Hours at 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Saturday will be docktails on Weisert’s deck. After docktails, we will have a potluck dinner with bring and grill your own meat. Bring a side dish or dessert to share (including serving utensils). Bring your own chairs, plates, and eating utensils, etc.
  • Saturday we will have Southern Peach Ice Tea (fortified with Jim Beam) and some wine. Please bring your favorite hors d’oeurves, along with serving utensils. If you have a favorite beverage, bring it.
  • Sunday will be a dinghy raft up.
  • Sunday the dinghy raft up will be bring your own beverage and an hors d’oeuvres to pass around.
  • Dinner is on your own Sunday night.

Other Events:

  • Bring your super soakers for a dinghy squirt gun war on Sunday afternoon (2:30 or so, unless we relocate; then time will be decided), weather permitting.
  • Some may want to explore by dinghy, kayak or SUP.

To find East River, head north from Hampton Roads past York River and into Mobjack Bay.  East River is on the north side of Mobjack Bay.  See the red curvy line and red circle.

We typically anchor rather far up the river.  See below.   There are plenty of places to anchor in East River, but you will find many of the BBSA boats anchored in the locations circled in the chart below.
